The most common questions from our clients

What is the difference between racking and shelving?

Shelving is generally used when smaller or lighter items need to be stored that are usually picked by hand. There are various accessories that compliment and are unique to a shelving system such as bins, dividers, rear and side cladding etc. which are used to achieve your storage needs. Racking is used when larger and heavier applications are required, usually used in a warehouse space where access to the products being stored is done with various materials handling equipment such as forklifts, narrow aisle order pickers etc.

Why is it important to purchase your racking or storage equipment from a reputable supplier?

Your storage equipment should be purchased and installed by a reputable supplier that is able to provide supporting documentation that all the design requirements adhere to design and installation codes such as SEMA, EN or FEM etc. this way the safety of your staff, equipment and product can be provided.

How often should racking be inspected?

Generally, this is used with common knowledge and is subject to the legal requirements from insurance, health and safety policies, internal policies etc. The health and safety executive (HSE) states that a ‘technically competent’ person should carry out independent racking inspections at intervals of no more than 12 months. Or is subject to the above-mentioned policies

What types of decking options are available in racking and shelving?

What types of decking options are available in racking and shelving? There are various decking options available for your racking, depending on your product storage needs: Timber decking is the most popular and cost-effective deck solution for racking applications: Closed Slatted Timber Decking – wooden slats which are fixed to bearers next to each other 4 mm spacing in between them. Open Slatted Timber Decking – wooden slats which are fixed to bearers with up to 40 mm gaps in between each slat. Wire Mesh Decks is becoming more and more popular and could affect ASIB requirements tremendously (consult a fire engineer for more information). It comes in various thicknesses and dimensions to suit the specific racking applications requirement and can be electro-galvanized or powder-coated. Having a mesh deck on your pallet beam loading levels will prevent products from falling to the level below when the pallet breaks. Solid Steel Decks can be used on both heavy-duty racking and Mini rack. The decks are supported on the beams with a vertical edge, which enables both beams of a single level to be joined, thus creating a durable hygienic storage pick level.

What storage system is recommended for greater storage capacity?

The most popular storage system for larger, heavier items is APR Pallet Racking, however, there are various Racking systems that can be designed and manufactured all depending on the customers’ requirements, warehouse space availability and product for example; Narrow Aisle Racking, Cantilever Racking, Radioshuttle Racking, Mobile Racking, Pushback Racking, Drive-in/through Racking, Pallet Live Storage and Carton Flow Racking. It is therefore advisable to consult with a professional sales representative to find the best warehouse solution for your specific needs.

How long does pallet racking installation take? Will it disrupt my ongoing operations?

Pallet Racking installations timelines are all dependent on the size of the project and the type of warehouse solution you have decided to install to suit your storage needs. The larger the project the longer the installation process. Installing racking in a fully functional warehouse does occur often, especially with racking extensions. It will require your warehouse manager to work closely with a professional installer to arrange and allocate sections of the warehouse that needs to be cleared for installation – but it should not disrupt your day-to-day operations too much.

How much do pallet racking/storage solutions cost?

The prices vary depending on the exact solution offered to the customers. Every project is customized to best suit the customer storage and operational requirements, hence, it is difficult to arrive at the standard price. Contact Palian Storage experts for an accurate estimate.

How does annual racking inspection help my warehouse operations?

The danger of unreported damages can be catastrophic and a structural collapse could not only result in a loss of products but serious injuries to staff. In addition to identifying safety risks, the overall installation will be graded in terms of utilization and efficiency as it is currently installed. Safety recommendations may be made to the existing structures.

What is racking used for?

The most frequent use for racking is to remove the pallets of your warehouse floor and stack them on a racking system. This allows you to fully utilize your warehouse floor space. Racking is a convenient way to immediately access your pallets. There are various types of racking systems, depending on your specific needs. The most frequently used racking system is APR Racking.

What is the difference between industrial racking systems?

There is a wide range of Pallet racking types, depending on your specific warehouse requirement and the product that you store: Industrial racking is designed to support large loads that will be lifted by the handling equipment. Pallet racking can be divided into 3 major categories: Adjustable pallet racking – More commonly known as APR Racking, is a selective storage solution designed to store palletized goods using forklift trucks. Pallets are reached from aisles that are dimensioned according to the mechanical trucks used. Live Storage pallet racking – Pallet live storage reduces travel time between locations. The long storage lanes allow the handling of large volumes of common products with live storage. Pallet live storage helps you reduce energy costs: lighting is limited to the load and unloads areas. Mobile pallet racking – is a system where racks are built on a mobile base and guided by rails on the floor. Driven by an electrical motor, the mobile base moves along the rails to open one or more access aisles.

What is the most commonly used type of racking?

Category: General Adjustable Pallet Racking (APR) is the most popular and versatile pallet racking system in the industry. It provides efficient use of space and immediate access to every load stored using any type of forklift.
